Trong bài hôm nay, Nhi xin giới thiệu với các bạn câu chuyện về hành trình 7 năm của loạt phim Sherlock holmes. Vì năm 2011 người ta đã phát hành bộ dĩa Bluray 14 phim về Holmes (bộ này Nhi có dĩa DVD và rất thích), nên Nhi thấy cần giới thiệu cho các bạn (nhất là các bạn còn hoài nghi trước phim trắng đen cổ điển) có dịp tìm thưởng thức những tác phẩm kinh điển nhất về hình mẫu Sherlock Holmes, và Nhi cam đoan là chúng hay hơn bất cứ phim hiện đại nào mà bạn đã xem về Holmes.

Trong dòng phim này, diễn viên Basil Rathbone giữ vai thám tử huyền thoại Sherlock Holmes và Nigel Bruce trong vai Bác sĩ John H. Watson. Trong lịch sử phim về sherlock Holmes, hình mẫu của Basil Rathbone là chuẩn mực nhất, với bộ mặt gầy, ánh mắt toát lên vẻ thông minh sắc sảo (đặc biệt trên phim đen trắng thì ánh mắt của Holmes thật đáng sợ), cùng những món đồ như chiếc nón kẻ carô và chiếc tẩu huyền thoại.

Trong bộ dĩa này ta sẽ theo chân dàn diễn viên suốt hành trình dài 7 năm, từ 1939 đến 1946, là thời hoàng kim thứ nhất của Hollywood, khi mà phim đen trắng đạt đến trình độ nghệ thuật cao nhất có thể trước khi đi qua thời kì phim màu. Có 14 bộ phim về Sherlock Holmes, một serie trinh thám vĩ đại ngang ngửa với James Bond: Hai bộ phim đầu quay tại hãng Fox, sau đó là 12 phim tại Universal.

Bộ phim Sherlock Holmes đầu tiên quay vào năm 1939 tại 20th Century-Fox, chuyển thể lại tác phẩm kinh điển Con chó của dòng họ Baskerville, được xem là tác phẩm hay nhất trong bộ tiểu thuyết về Holmes của Conan Doyle. Kịch bản phim được lấy từ một vở kịch của William Gillette vào năm 1899 nên có nhiều đoạn kịch tính tô vẽ thêm cho câu chuyện.

Sau khi thực hiện bộ phim thứ hai trong cùng năm 1939, là The adventures of Sherlock Holmes, hãng Fox bỏ dở dự án và không tiếp tục nữa, có thể vì họ muốn đầu tư tiền bạc vào những nhân vật trinh thám mới lạ hơn như Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto, hay Michael Shayne. Hơn nữa, kinh phí làm phim Sherlock Holmes cao hơn những phim trinh thám hạng B khác, về khoản trang phục, cảnh trí và Rathbone lúc đó là một ngôi sao sáng với tiền catsê cao hơn nhiều.
Tuy nhiên, bộ phim The adventures of Sherlock Holmes mô tả cuộc đấu trí giữa Holkmes và kẻ thù truyền kiếp; giáo sư Moriatty đã đạt một thành công vang dội chưa từng thấy, dù nó ra mắt vào tháng 10 năm 1939, chỉ cách 1 tháng trước khi thế chiến thứ 2 bùng nổ tại châu Âu.
