World War II shooters are about as rare as sunny days in Arizona. So to really succeed in the genre, a game must either be innovative, particularly engrossing, or a little of both. City Interactive's Battlestrike: Force of Resistance is none of the above. It doesn't compel you to run back to the computer to play it, it doesn't offer anything that makes you say, "Hey, I haven't seen that before," and in fact it's so short that veteran players will finish it in a single afternoon. Nevertheless, there's something about it that isn't entirely unlikeable.

Perhaps it's the variety. Unlike many budget-priced wartime shooters, Battlestrike doesn't feel repetitive. It doesn't plunk you down into the same situation over and over again, and it certainly isn't one big, never-ending firefight on a nameless battlefield somewhere. Instead, it asks you to take on the role of one John Forsyth, a British-trained commando operating behind enemy lines and leading the resistance movement as it tries, ever so slightly, to derail the Nazi war machine.

In Battlestrike, you may find yourself hijacking a train or robbing a bank. You'll blow up a bridge, do the same to a munitions factory, try to thwart the launch of a dreaded V2 rocket, and occasionally join forces with other resistance fighters for those jobs that you can't handle on your own. You'll climb ladders, hurdle obstacles, explore any number of indoor and outdoor environments, and even use anti-aircraft guns to take down a Messerschmitt or two. Placing explosives and watching them do their thing is a big part of the game, as is manually reloading and ensuring you have the correct weapon at the ready for the task at hand.

Unfortunately, this is all a lot easier than it sounds. For example, other than cutscenes, you'll never have a chance to interact with other characters (other than to kill them, of course). You'll rarely need to use reason to get out of a given situation, and you'll never be able to step too far outside the linear "plot" City Interactive has set up. Placing explosives is not especially difficult given that you're shown, via overlaid graphics, exactly where they should go. Taking command of a fixed machine gun or anti-aircraft gun is as easy as walking toward it and hitting the "F" key. Still, we appreciate the diversity – in both the game's environments and its tasks.

Shooter veterans will notice right away that Battlestrike's AI is erratic. Sometimes, enemy soldiers will react to you even before they've had any chance to hear or see you. Other times, you can fire off round after round just a few feet from a whole pack of bad guys and attract no attention whatsoever. The best course of action is to assume you're being watched virtually all the time, remain vigilant toward incoming grenades and distant snipers, and be ready to adopt crouch or prone positions where you become a much smaller target.
