Với sự hiện diện của quân đội phat xít Nhật, là nét mới chủ yếu nhất trong phiên bản thứ 5 này, hãng sản xuất hứa hẹn WaW sẽ là phiên bản chứa đựng những yếu tố đen tối và tàn bạo nhất của chiến tranh trong toàn bộ dòng game. Mỗi người lính Nhật khi tham chiến đều mang trong mình tư tưởng “quyết tử đến cùng”. Hãng Treyarch cũng quyết tâm thực hiện trọn vẹn yếu tố này nên bạn cũng cần chuẩn bị sẵn tinh thần gặp phải những đối thủ cực kỳ tàn bạo, không hề sợ chết và sẵn sàng “ăn thua đủ” với người chơi.

Với đặc trưng như vậy, AI của máy là một trong những khía cạnh được Treyarch chú tâm cải tiến nhiều nhất. Thật sự, việc tinh chỉnh AI là rất cần thiết với WaW, khi phải thể hiện lối chiến đấu rất đặc trưng của phát xít Nhật. Đó là lối đánh theo kiểu du kích rất khó chịu và các cuộc phục kích đầy bất ngờ. Hơn nữa, bối cảnh tại một hòn đảo Thái Bình Dương với môi trường rừng cây, đầm lầy cực kỳ thích hợp để thể hiện lối chiến đấu này.
